Anime recommendation catena(2): Elfen Lied

EF

Key word: Bloody Loli Violence Cruelty Adult only The doomsday Tragedy

When the miserable tone of the opining “Lilium” starts, the anime as a whole seems to be crying.

In the beginning of the anime, the massacre is kind of apparent advice. After subjecting to the shock it created, I have made a prevision for the following blood killing process.

With the music of dark ballad, all the government officials were slaughtered without mercy, even including the innocent clerk—-it’s indeed the most bloody anime I have never seen before, the violence it contain is set regardless of the consciousness and sympathy, till you are accustomed to the blood cover all the screen , you might be able to know the the source of the deep grief, more or less.

One of the most impacting scene: Lucy and Nana meet each other first time, two girls with the Loli look fight against fiercely, and then one of the Bishyojo (Lucy) successfully breaks up the other’s body(Nana), cut her legs and hands ,make her become a misshapen one. Besides this there are many similar scene existing in the anime, so I just call this like “bloody banquet”.” Some people say that the violence in Elfen Lied” should be accused most, they are afraid that this anime might convert a misleading information to the audience; the violence is commonplace, a inevitable instinct of human being. We are all told since our childhood that killing and violence is bad, fight and hurt should be forbidden. According to the mainstream ideology of our society, there is no doubt that a anime which has so much violence factors like this should be suppressed completely and threw to the rubbish bin, in most time it’s a prevailed thought.

So, if you are feeling not comfortable or even sick during you watching this anime, you had better stop; or you are kinda person who feel so excited about the performance of the anime, you should stop as well……XD

OK, let’s be more rational to valuate this anime made by Japanese.

Many a Japanese Comic/Anime producer or author is treated as sadism, due to their cute feeling of devastation like their country is isolated in the ocean. Tokyo or the whole Japan has been ruined infinite times under their brush-pencil, the world is also not exception. Perhaps is the only country which has suffered the attack of nuclear boom, so their literacy works are full filled with the disposition of doomsday. The main guys in Japan anime always act themselves as the savior role, most time the fate of all human being are depending on their hands. In“Elfen Lied” the heroic is also born to extinguish all the human being, so it’s easy to understand why she is so incline to kill and fordo. It just refreshes my memory of fascist, in their eyes the Judah is an inferior ethic, in comparison, they Nordic is the most noble ethic in the world, So it’s their responsibility to eliminate the Judah and rule other ethics, killing is just the best way to achieve the goal. Even in our day life, we may have the similar experience, people who in their childhood using water to poor the ant hole…. At that time in your eye it just a trivial matter for fun, but you are ruining a kingdom of ant indeed. So the god say: you all the people are guilty. When we destroyed ourselves more seriously, we have the position to devastate the world more fiercely.

It is to say that “ using violence to deracinate itself” ? the history of our human being virtually is the history of war and killing. During this history we only could find one bright shine is the campaign leaded by Mahatma Gandhi , Nonviolent and No cooperation Movements. His faithful belief towards Buddhism help him to make this crucial choice which is acceptable in that period.“’an eye for an eye’ just making our world to be blind”, its Gandhi’s viewpoint. This unprecedented illustrious campaign in human’s history might become the peak of poetic perfection, nowadays people are prone to warship the fables which can bring them the benefit, they are just follow their instinct or finding a shield for their fragility, but not out from their spirit of life. So there is no longer a second Gandhi will occur, as well as the God will not sent Jesus come to the world to save people again. “Elfen Lied” in a way try to show the human nature in the frantic violence, but it is of little vain, because when it show up some human nature, it also abandoned the humanism. The mood of this anime is sad and ugly. Gandhi’s “Nonviolentism” is a form of humanism, but it restrain the human nature, because it restrict the instinct of fighting and violence.

However, the violence in “Elfen Lied” is sad and woeful, with the desperate devastation. It’s violence mainly derived from human’s degeneration, so , the killing is not guilty but ought to, only the love could be save the killing itself, the love can embrace and quench the fire of violence. The author try to observe his characters from the visual angle of god, as for a writer(of course, after-hours one) I could understand what he is thinking, and what he is angry with. Among the people who are affecting by the disposition of doomsday could not find a savior as Gandhi, but either Elfen Lied or Gandhi’s”Nonviolentism” to the end just has one purpose, that is: stop the killing and hurt, cherish the life and love.

When the main guy whose family members are killed entirely crying to death:“Please!Stop it! Please!” he is sublimed as a god and doesn’t want to make any revenge with hurting anyone. In contrary, he is more liberal than any other. AS the g grievous melodies rise from music box rise on his hand, we might think all along what these melodies are
Grieve for, and what story are telling with sadness……The script of OP“Lilium”is said that come from the Bible, and the singer Kumiko Noma sing this song in Latin

ELFEN LIED——Lilium
Singer Kumiko Noma (小西香叶)

os iusti meditabitur sapientiam
The wisdom are told by the sage

et lingua eius loquetur iudicium
The justice are wised by the sage

beatus vir qui suffert tentationem
gospel belong to the people subject to the trail

quoniam cum probatus fruerit accipiet coronam vitae
‘Cause after the trail, he get the corona of life surely

kyrie, ignis divine eleison
Yahveh with holy fire show mercy

o quam sancta
a, how holy it is

quam serena
How peaceful it is

quam benigna
How warm it is

quam amoena
How comfortable it is

o castitatis lilium
Aa, as white as lilium.

The song seems to be sounds of nature, the soft voice with both grief and mercy appeasing the soul which suffered a lot from the trample, just like the calling from the heaven, back to the sacred status, forgets all the sadness.

EF4

Eventually, how we could back to the Eden, and reclaim the love from the lord? Only after the death? How could we cleanse this filthy world and get rid of our sin? War and conflict could stop on infinite time? May be I should not have any expectation, ‘cause I don’t believe there has another world existing, never. So , people like me don’t have any religion belief, and I am not wander the salvation.

The world in a way is beyond hope, but luckily, we still have some people worth loving. The heaven might be good, but I don’t to go. As for me, I will choose the way to live in a deprived world to love my love.

PS: This aritical is interpreted by Pony Mark . Following is the manuscript.

manuscript:

ELFEN LIED——Lilium

Kumiko Noma

os iusti meditabitur sapientiam

et lingua eius loquetur iudicium

beatus vir qui suffert tentationem

quoniam cum probatus fruerit accipiet coronam vitae

kyrie, ignis divine eleison

o quam sancta

quam serena

quam benigna

quam amoena

o castitatis lilium

I think this is a great show, highly recommended. It is super violent, but has strong characters, too.

I began watching this movie back in 2006 and found myself hooked in the first 5 minutes (definitely no mean feat, I assure you). Sadly, college got in the way so I never really got to finish watching the series (I believe I only got through a few episodes). After reading your synopsis, I’m almost tempted to re-watch it from the beginning and actually finish it this time around. :]
